Round 6
Race 3
Lap 1, Turn 7-9
Drivers: M. Thornley & N. Faf
Video: https://youtu.be/zM7nhg1MAs0?si=i4DbSqKkIOm96-Q5
Decision: Racing Incident - Warning to Faf
The stewards deliberated this report at length and determined that neither driver was solely responsible for the incident.
While the video demonstrated Thornley's turn in point to establish if Faf was entitled to space or not, the stewards reviewed other laps of Thornley's and deemed this to be fractionally earlier than other laps. While also considering that there is a very large disparity between in game track limits (used by Domsorl to govern track limits in single car incidents) and the white line (used by Domsorl to govern racing room), there almost certainly would have been overlap by the time a line necessary to leave a car width to the white line was taken. With the fast closing speed of Faf and the presence of some mild lag, it was impossible to determine conclusively if racing space was earned or not by axle overlap. In saying that, the stewards deemed that while Faf may have earned the right to room, his move was unlikely to lead to a conclusion other than contact as given his position to Thornley, expecting Thornley to be able to see and respond to him occupying that part of the track was unrealistic. The stewards decided to pass on a warning to Faf for creating a situation where contact was more than likely.
We don't like to take ourselves too seriously at Domsorl, but our stewarding guidelines generally try to reflect real life racing as that provides a high level of simulation and also a largely shared expectation of driving standards. All stewards agreed that in a real life situation, Faf would be given a firm finger wagging. All drivers are requested to err on the side of avoiding a situation that would lead to contact.
